Lima, the capital of Peru, is the largest city in Perú and South America's third largest country.
The city of Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro on January 18th, 1535. Its official name was Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings).
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Lima was the Viceroyalty of Spain in the New World.
On July 28th 1821, Lima became the capital of independent Perú after it gained its independence
from Spain.
The city
of Lima is located in the Pacific coast. Although Lima is located in the tropics, the Humboldt Current just off the coast
significantly cools its climate.
The original center of Lima was the Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral, City Hall, and Government Palace are located. Many mansions surviving from colonial days now house
government offices, museums, and restaurants. The oldest institution of higher learning of New World is Lima's University of San Marcos.
